Mary Driver was born in Leeds in 1800 to John Driver, a maltster, and Frances Winn. She attended Ackworth school from 1811-1813. In 1827 she married Caleb Richardson, a miller from Bishopwearmouth, and the couple had nine children. The sampler came into the collection via one of Mary's descendants.
